Artist's Comments

Er... well, it was midnight and couldn't help the random flat-colour concept drawing of doom? ;_; I've got a bit of a worldbuilding obsession going on at the moment D:
(now does this go in fanart or anthro? Hmmm...)

*cough* Anyway. I realised a while ago that when I write Sonic fanfiction, I don't describe characters based on the official art. I see them more as anthros. Because I'm awkward like that. I've made several attempts at drawing Sonic characters in that style before, but they always looked a bit... blurg... wrong. Proportions all meh. Heads the wrong shape. Ack.
I think this one is much more like it. Although since it was drawn at midnight, please ignore the fact I have zero grasp of anatomy and can't draw legs, and that one of their heads is too big, as at the time I was too tired to do much about this ^_^
In fact i'm gong to flag it as critique discouraged because BLEH. I know. >.<

So on the left we have male and female hedgehogs. One with sharp stiff quills (like Sonic pre-blue) and one with hair-ish quills like Amy. (it's not a gender thing. I just felt like drawing one of each.)
One the right, male and female echidnas, one with knuckle claws and one without. (again, not a gender thing. Neither is the colouring.)

Note 1: these are not supposed to be any characters in particular. They're just a couple of average hedgehogs and a couple of average echidnas.

Note 2: I don't want any comments about how tall Sonic is in the next-gen game, ta. :p in The Strange World of Thalia they're staying short. Dammit.

Note 3: *sigh* yes, naked furries x_x well it's not going under Mature, there's nothing to see. I reckon most Mobians don't *need* to wear clothes as everything's covered with fur/scales/feathers and their um, proportions aren't as obvious as a human's anyway. Well apart from Rouge. But she's weird.
I like my characters to NOT look like Pamela Anderson ^_^
I just hope you can still tell which gender is which... LOOK, EYELASHES! *points*

Bleh, why do I get the feeling this is one of those pics i'm going to really, really regret posting? Oh well. Actually I'm tempted to do a series of these now XD

Why so shy? I think this is one of the most awesome things I've ever seen. Actually, I'm gonna save it and use it for reference. It's the kind of blend between realistic critter (Redwall style) and Sonic style, without succumbing to the trendy anime anthro look. And the details are fantastic.

The great thing is, they even look like real hedgehogs and real echidnas, but look similar enough so you can tell they're both spiky animals. XD

I like - it's thoroughly intereting. And I agree actually - I get very annoyed at the proliferation of clothed or non-clothed and people arguing over it. ugh.

I have to admit it's nice seeing Sonic world based anthros that actually look LIKE the animals they're supposed to be. I love the way you've interpreted the echidna 'knuckles' too, really makes me think of the Oddworld series.

Great job =)

My goodness... this is awsome!

I love this style of the Mobians, as opposed to the way Archie and Sega does it.

Good work Thalia, couple of things i'd pick up on though (i know you said critique discouraged but i just can't resist <_<;)

What was your reasoning behind making the quills on them all quite so many shades darker than the fur? I understand that's how it works with real-world animals too, it just seems a little too seperated tone-wise to me.

If you were to do other mobian anthro characters, for instance a fox, how would you differentiate them from the hedgehog design (specifically your female here)? Aside from the tail and arms, she does have quite a fox-like look to her.

Ignoring those completely trivial points that are just me being pedantic, this is a really good piece. Very creative and imaginative, the difference between male and female is recogniseable.

What other animals would you consider doing? Rabbits always an option, i'd be interested to see your take on the pig family, porker evolved into a more anthro character over the years through STC, the kind of creature that Grimer can be classed to would be interesting to see too...

Great work! =D

I'd probably have a go at some of the reptiles, and the usual rabbits and foxes. Yep, the female hedgehog does look fox-like. Probably my least favourite of the four. A fox though would have a different head shape to a hedgehog with a longer snout and larger ears, as well as being furrier.
As for the quills being a different shade... I like the look myself, but you wouldn't really notice it if the images were shaded.

Wow o_o Holy Freak :omg: This is mighty creative :D Like an overlook upon the most faved of species on Mobius? Thats really neat  I really adore the Echidna half of this :) the female looks so pretty with a Winter Coat! :3 and they all look so serious, apart from the Hedgehog Gal! Maybe their much more free-spirited then everyone else :giggle:
